  • Heritage in the Balance: 500+ Pacific Lumbers Against the MAXXAM Takeover

Some people are comfortable with the efforts of Charles Hurwitz and his Maxxam group to establish ownership of the Pacific Lumber Company. Most of us certainly are not! We, the employees who have signed this, do not feel that this impending takeover would be in the best interest of ourselves, the shareholders, and the communities in which our company serves. Most of us are the hardworking individuals who feel that PALCO was an honorable, well-serving company, with a heritage that we could be proud of—not only a secure place to work, but one which dealt conscientiously with the preservation ad proper management of our vital resources:  our people and the redwoods.

In all earnestness, we do not feel that a company of real estate investors from the east coast can manage resources such as ours with the consideration that has been shown all these years by the Murphy Family. We wish to protect the integrity of our company, which has served our community so well. The fight is not over. Maxxam has not yet been allowed to actually purchase any tendered shares, and those which have been tendered will become withdrawable if they haven’t been purchased by Maxxam and Hurwitz by November 30, 1985, or if a competing tender offer is made. It is our sincere belief that if the company’s leadership were back in the hands of the Murphy Family, the company’s business, our environment, and the communities in which we all live will continue to prosper. There may be some changes in our company in the days to follow, but we collectively support, with confidence, the Murphy’s efforts to save the Pacific Lumber Company.

The cost of this expression of our opinion has been paid by us.
